John G. Deemer

John Grundy Deemer, age 68, passed away peacefully on Thursday October 17, 2019, at the Community Hospice Warner Center on Amelia Island, Florida. John was born on March 4, 1951 in Williamsport, PA to Nettie Louise Coit Deemer and John January Grundy Deemer.

For high school, John attended Blair Academy where he became passionate about skiing and photography. From an early age, John also enjoyed traveling and the perspective it brought on the many different ways that people live.

John received his Bachelors degree from St. Lawrence College in 1976. He married his first wife, Rebecca Elizabeth Savage, on June 4, 1977, with whom he had two daughters, Bridget and Rachel. He raised his daughters in Tolland, Connecticut, where he was an active member of the United Congregational Church and the local bridge club. He worked as a contractor, addressing technical challenges such as Y2K for Hartford-based insurance companies. After retirement, he moved down to Amelia Island, Florida where he married his second wife, Nancy Dale Duck, on October 25, 2015.

John gave generously to humanitarian and environmental charities throughout his life and held deep compassion for those that were suffering. He seemed to always believe the best in people, strangers and friends alike. He was well read and enjoyed staying abreast of the local, national and international news. His kind and generous spirit, his witty and insightful conversation, and his dry sense of humor will be missed by all who knew him.

John was preceded in death by his father, John, and his mother, Louise.

He is survived by his wife, Nancy; his two children, Bridget Read Deemer and partner Mike of Hood River, OR and Rachel Coit Deemer of Suffield, CT; his two sisters, Willie Wickman and husband Darrell of Harvard, MA and Barbara Douglass and husband Lou of Atlanta, GA.

A memorial service will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, November 16, 2019 at the Covenant Central Presbyterian Church in Williamsport, PA.

Donations on Johns behalf can be sent to Doctors Without Borders, World Wildlife Fund, or UNICEF.

It was with much sadness that I read today in the Williamsport, PA Sun-Gazette of Jacks passing. We were friends during our teen years. I got to know Jack because I was best friends with Ellen Curry until she moved away. I remember many fun get togethers at his parents beautiful and stately home. We built a snow fort there one winter and celebrated New Years Eve with a party in the basement. I remember riding in the snow in Jacks car which got around great in the snow. I remember the fun times we had at Dunwoody Big Bear Club and Grays Run. Jack was fun, kind and generous. I am so sorry for your loss. We continued to correspond when he went to college but then lost touch. Ive often wondered about him and what twists and turns his life took. Now Jack, Ellen Curry and Obie OBrien are gone. God bless you!

I was lucky enough to get to know Jack in our high school years. Although we were both from Williamsport, Jack was at Blair and I was at the Peddie School. These schools have sports competition histories and was the source of a lot of verbal banter. We had a group of friends in Williamsport with similar vacation schedules. We enjoyed epic bridge battles and each others company. We were our own version of the Boys of Summer. Jack was one of the most gentle and easy going guys in our gang. I have very fond memories of those days. I remember Jacks curiosity about the world. He traveled to places like Afghanistan, on his own, with no agenda other than to explore the world. A lot of us traveled but Jack did it his own way on his own schedule. Ill miss his dry sense of humor and the chance to bid and make 3 no trump and the fun memories we shared. My deepest sympathy to all his loved ones. Ill be at the Williamsport memorial service.
