John G. Gilley, 74 of Amelia Island, FL, formerly of Marietta, GA, passed away on Monday, October 2, 2023.
Born on March 13, 1949, in Atlanta, Georgia to the late W.W. Gilley and Sarah Elizabeth Griffith Gilley. He grew up in Atlanta, GA, and graduated from Jonesboro High School in 1967. He married his high school sweetheart, Patricia Boatright, in 1971 while they were attending college. He graduated from the University of Georgia with degrees in Chemistry and Microbiology in 1973.
After graduation, John began working for the University of Georgia in the Food Science Department where he discovered his love of computers. He moved back to Atlanta in 1975 with his bride to build their life together. In 1979, the couple welcomed their daughter Stacie Caryn into their home in Marietta, GA. He is remembered as a kind and hard-working father who loved to spoil his daughter; as well as a playful young soul who found so much joy in playing games with his two beloved grandsons. His favorite pastime was watching their ball games near and far. He enjoyed retired island life and taste-testing every restaurant on Amelia with his wife.
John was an accomplished computer software developer who founded John Gilley and Associates in 1992. He enjoyed dismantling a computer just for the fun of putting it back together. He loved to speed in sports cars and slow down for crabbing on the beach. He was a generous family man who was passionate about Georgia Football. DGD.
John leaves behind his wife of nearly 52 years, Patricia B. Gilley of Amelia Island, FL; daughter Stacie Gilley Holliman, son-in-law Chris Holliman, and grandsons, Hunter Holliman and Ridge Holliman, all of Amelia Island, FL; cousin Glenna Gilley Reed of Atlanta, GA; and niece Erica Gilley Keating of Fayetteville, GA. He was preceded in death by his parents, and brother David Michael Gilley, all of Atlanta, GA.
A beachside memorial service for family and friends will be held at a later date at Amelia Island State Park.
Donations may be made in his memory to the American Heart Association, University of Georgia, Fernandina Beach Youth Football Association, or the charity of your choice
