John Holmes Quarterman

2024-04-15

John Holmes Quarterman, 83, of Fernandina Beach, FL passed away peacefully on Monday, April 15, 2024.

John was a man of honor, generosity, and loyalty. His authenticity was matched only by his honesty and character. He also shared with those who knew him well a sense of humor that was as medicinal as it was entertaining.

John was born and raised in Waycross, Georgia on March 20, 1941, to the late Hon. John Holmes Quarterman, Sr. and Jessie Elizabeth Smith. As the youngest of three, and only boy, John graduated Waycross High School and went on to serve 6 honorable years in the Air Force.

John met Tonia Day in the summer of 1964 in Fernandina Beach where his mother resided at the time. They began their life journey together and were married on August 7, 1965, at St. Peter's Episcopal Church. In their early years together, John and Tonia lived in Lakeland, Florida where he began his 30-year career in banking and finance. After retiring, John devoted much of his life to being a grandfather. He and Tonia eventually returned to Fernandina Beach – a place they have always called home.

John was a devoted father and grandfather. He never missed a moment of his children’s lives and provided a love not known to many. He is remembered to have an unmatched level of work ethic, integrity, generosity, and kindness. All that knew John knows that he left this world in a better place.

John’s spirit will be carried on by his adoring wife, Tonia, of almost 59 years. Their love and commitment to each other provided powerful examples to generations to come of what marriages could be. His family included children, John Quarterman III, Michele and Grant McDougall, and Charles and Jenny Quarterman. Five grandchildren, Sam and Drew McDougall and Jack, Alex, and Layne Quarterman, and sister Ann Harrington.

A graveside service will be held Saturday, April 27, 2024, 2 pm at St. Peter's Episcopal Church Cemetery.

Flowers and condolences may be sent to Oxley-Heard Funeral Homes, Fernandina Beach, FL.
