Joy Heard Galphin
2017-11-17
Joy Heard Galphin passed away Friday November 17, 2017 in her home following a courageous bout with heart disease. Born, on December 14, 1944 in Atlanta, Ga., she was the daughter of the late Bedford Harper Heard and Reba Waldrop Heard of Atlanta, Georgia. She spent her early years growing up in Atlanta and graduated from Roosevelt High School in the class of 1962. She learned the art of shorthand writing and was top in her class. Her skill landed her a job as a court reporter for the Fulton County, Georgia Judicial System. Subsequently, with her husband she formed CES Office Centers in Atlanta.
On December 7, 1974, she married W. N. Nip Galphin. In 1998, they intended to retire to Fernandina Beach, but they soon purchased a local real estate management company and formed Galphin Real Estate Services, where she was active for many years as a beloved partner and confidant.
She loved the beach, animals, crafts and gardening (and shopping). She was a great wife, a great sister, a terrific mother, but most of all she loved her Grandchildren, her Great Grandchildren and especially her two beloved dogs, Heidi and Channing. Her love for these brought her joy and enabled her to bring joy and happiness to others. She loved to make others feel special, especially her family. Whether it was showing them the most extravagant holiday and birthday celebrations, supporting their accomplishments, or simply spending time with them, she loved to love and it was evident through everything she shared. She was truly one-of-a-kind.
She leaves behind her beloved husband of 43 years, W.N. Nip Galphin, her daughter and son-in-law, Vicky and Gary Fowler of Atlanta, her son, Jay Galphin of Loganville, Ga., her son and daughter-in-law, Scot and Alicia Galphin of Gainesville, Ga., her brother and sister-in-law Phillip and Martha Heard of Monticello, Ga., her brother, Stephen Heard of Atlanta, her sister Bevel Chancelades of Fernandina Beach, her seven grandchildren, Brittani, Lauren, Nicholas, Andrew, Morgan, William, and Madalyn, and her seven Great Grandchildren, Grant, Brock, Brody, Griffin, Cleo, Chloe and Brett.
The family will receive friends from 5 7 PM Monday evening at Oxley-Heard.
Funeral Service will be held in the Burgess Chapel of Oxley-Heard on Tuesday at 11:00 AM, with Rev. Jim Tippins officiating. She will be laid to rest in Bosque Bello Cemetery. Flowers are accepted or memorials may be made in her memory to the Nassau Humane Society, 995 Piper Lane, Fernandina Beach, FL 32034 or the American Heart Association.
