Peggy Smelt Day

As a member of First Presbyterian and a parent of a Special needs daughter ,Joyce always offered hope and encouragement! Her membership in NAMI provided helpful wisdom and comfort . Plus , Joyce always was a sharp dresser ! Thanks Joyce for all you did for the community! We all loved Cherie !

Nancy and Jim Mayo

Joyce was a long time client of Nancy's but the relationship transformed over the years to more than a professional service. Joyce was like family. As Joyce declined and Nancy saw her frequent hospitalizations because she would not take her medicines correctly she e me couraged Erin he granddaughter to come home and care for her. Joyce would not have lived this long had it not been for Erin. For the last three years the joy of her life has been her great grand daughter Cora. Through Erin's pregnancy she longed to see that baby born. As she watched her grow through the first year she gave new life to Joyce and helped her overcome the sadness of the death of her youngest daughter Cherie. Most recently she celebrated her 92nd birthday along side Cora's 2nd. It was the strings of family love that Joyce with us so long. Finally she was just too tired. We'll miss you Joyce and God speed to your new life where all tears are dried.

Joyce Martin Smith

Joyce Martin Smith, 92, of Fernandina Beach, FL, passed away August 31st 2024. She was born to parents Vernon Hussey and Ruby Hussey, on August, 6 1932 in Vidalia, GA.

She attended Wesleyan College and Georgia Southern before marrying Benjamin Martin Sr. and having four children. She later Married Billie Smith after Benjamin had passed.

Joyce was known for being a lady, love of the lord and her family. She enjoyed being a mother, grandmother and great grandmother. Her great-granddaughter Cora made her light up and smile daily.

Joyce took part in many aspects of the community with garden club, pelican club, Amelia Island Club and most of all First Presbyterian Church. She had been coming to Amelia Island since she was a young girl and knew that she wanted to make it her home. She shared a special relationship with her Granddaughter Erin and they would often been seen together around Amelia Island.

She was Generous, Sweet, Loving and enjoyed Family time, time with friends and Hosting events with her friends, Receiving Flowers, making/ eating ice-cream and watching Comedy Shows with her daughter Cherie.

Joyce is survived by Erin Zelin, Granddaughter, Clayton Zelin, Grandson in Law, Cora Zelin, Great Granddaughter, Michelle Martin, Daughter, Beringer Baker, Grandson, Ben Martin, Son, Suzanne Martin, Daughter, Zach Ethari, Grandson, Safia Ethari, Granddaughter, Sylvia Smith Adams, Step Daughter, Cynthia Joyce Hollingsworth Step Daughter.

She was preceded in death by her husband’s Benjamin Wilson Martin Sr. and William P.C. Smith as well as her Daughter Joyce Cherie Martin.

The family has entrusted Oxley Heard Funeral Directors with the arrangements. A local service will be provided by First Presbyterian Church, with time and date to be announced.

She will be laid to rest with her parents and daughter at Evergreen Cemetery in Fitzgerald, GA.
