Judith Timson Lane

2019-02-04

Judith T. Lane, age 72, formerly of Fernandina Beach, Florida, currently of Jacksonville, Florida, passed away on Sunday, February 3, 2019 at the McGraw Center in Jacksonville.

She was born in 1947 in Great Barrington, Massachusetts to the late Alex P. and Jeannette Nadelberg. Judith grew up in Copake, New York, and Pittsfield, Massachusetts. She graduated from Pittsfield High School and was in the Vassar College class of 1969, later earning an MBA from the University of New Mexico in the late 1970s.

Judith worked in a number of fields, including social work for the State of New Mexico before finding her calling in information technology. After teaching herself programming, she quickly rose through the ranks to design and implement a welfare case management system for New Mexico. She lived for several years on the Azore Islands, Portugal, working in IT for the U.S. Air Force as a civilian employee. She moved to Scott Air Force Base, near St. Louis, Missouri, to continue her IT work for the Air Force. There she met her husband, Sam, an Air Force officer. They were married in 1991 and immediately moved to Seoul, South Korea, where Judith worked as an IT systems project manager for a U.S.-South Korean joint venture. Two years later they moved to the Washington, DC, area, where they lived for the next 16 years. There she was employed by several high technology companies, eventually becoming an executive for a Federally Funded Research and Development corporation. In her last assignment, she worked as a senior advisor for strategic planning to executives at the newly created Department of Homeland Security. After retiring in 2010, she and Sam landed on Amelia Island. Not content to be retired, she dove headlong into volunteering with the City government, helping in the Planning and IT departments and later serving on the City Planning Advisory Board.

Judith treasured all things about nature: bird watching, animals, and trees even going so far as to name the old live oak trees in her yard on Amelia Island. An avid Anglophile, she loved everything about English history and culture, especially enjoying the prose of English authors. The highlight of her career was a year spent on assignment in London.

She leaves behind her husband of 28 years, Sam Lane of Jacksonville, Florida.

She will be laid to rest in Arlington National Cemetery at a later date.

Memories

DAVE & DEBBIE LOTT February 6, 2019
Sam,
Debbie and I were so saddened to learn of Judiths passing. She was a tireless fighter against her illness always maintaining her can do spirit. The city of Fernandina Beach is a better place for all the volunteer work that Judith did for both the city and a number of organizations. We offer our prayers for strength and peace during this time.

Sam, I am so sorry for your loss. I lost track of you after moving off the Island. I respected Judith and her work towards preserving the Islands beauty. I look back fondly on the days spent at your home.

Sam:
I was saddened to learn of Judiths passing. I worked with her on the PAB some years ago and was impressed with her focus and understanding of what was important. I saw her values and intensity put to good work later in her dealings with the City.
Her passing is a great loss to our community. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

ED AND TERESA RENIKER February 8, 2019
I enjoyed every conversation I ever had with Judith. She was such a quick and insightful person but never overran you with that intellect and wit. Working for her on projects at MITRE was so insightful and instructive to someone new to the consulting world. Her kindness and genuine interest were unusually warm and helpful. It was a pleasure to know her and call her a friend. I cant imagine how hard this must be for you, Sam. You are in our prayers and we shall not forget her.

So saddened by Judiths passing. Not only was she a consummate professional and dedicated colleague, but a wonderful human being. We are all richer for her having been among us, and poorer for her loss.

Judy was my cousin on her mothers side of the family.. I hadnt seen her since the late sixties. Ive always wondered what happened to her. It seems she finally had a happy life.

AMY GROSS September 14, 2019
Just was my only cousin in her fathers Side. We grew up like sisters although neither of us had smooth sailing. We lost contact but reconnected in our 40s. Sam was her guardian angel and I loved him for how he cared for her. She cut me off a few years ago and I thought she might be ill. Now I know she was. May her kind soul Rest In Peace.
