Louie E. Gray

2019-12-16

Mr. Louie E. Gray, 93, of Fernandina Beach passed away Sunday, December 15, 2019 at the Warner Center for Caring.

Born in Macon, Georgia, Mr. Gray was a son of the late Charles Edward and Thelma Chiles Gray. As a young man and a member of Americas Greatest Generation he proudly served the U. S. Armys 11th Airborne Division in both the Philippines and Japan during World War II. After that service his love of country and his patriotism were always important to him.

From the war he would return home and eventually begin work for Bell Telephone. In 1950 he married Marion Davis. They would spend the next 69 years together and their family would grow to include loving daughter and son as well as several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

He loved horses, watching football and baseball, cooking and enjoyed reading about World War II. After a long career with Bell Telephone and its successors he retired and moved to Lake Martin, Alabama. There he also enjoyed life on the lake and playing golf.

After some years at Lake Martin, he and his wife would move to Conyers, Georgia. Some three years ago they moved to Fernandina Beach to be nearer family.

In addition to his parents he was predeceased by his siblings, C. L., Tabitha, Dorothy, Helen, Bobby and Lila Mae.

He leaves behind his wife, Marion Gray of Fernandina Beach; his daughter, Terri Bell and her husband, Carlton, also of Fernandina Beach; his son, Barry Edward Gray and his wife, Darlene, of Belleair Beach, Florida; a brother, Ray Gray and his wife, Ilene, of Powder Springs, Georgia; a sister, Jean Rabon of Conyers, Georgia; seven grandchildren, Jason, Ryan, Jessica, Hannah, Logan, Landon and Lance; ten great-grandchildren, Payton, Harrison, Brayden, Averi, Olivia, Zoey, Piper, Scarlett, Sailor and Sunday as well as several other extended family members.

Mr. Grays family will receive friends Tuesday, December 17, 2019 from 5:00 until 7:00 PM at Oxley-Heard Funeral Directors.

A graveside funeral service, with military honors, will be held Wednesday, December 18, 2019 at Jacksonville National Cemetery (Lane # 1) with Pastor Aaron Bell officiating beginning at 12:30 PM.
