Marjorie Lorraine Harper passed away peacefully on Thursday, July 6, 2023, at her home in Fernandina Beach, Fla., surrounded by her loving family. A remarkable journey lasting more than 101 years, Marjorie's life was one filled with resilience, compassion, and a deep love for family.
Marjorie was born on Dec. 19, 1921, in St. Louis, Mo., to William and Florence Schmidt of Gillespie, Ill. On Sept. 1, 1940, she married James C. Prior to becoming a mother, Marjorie joined the esteemed ranks of Rosie the Riveter, dedicating herself to working on planes at a factory in Detroit where she contributed her strength and skills to the effort during World War II.
Throughout her life, Marjorie's heart overflowed with affection for animals, particularly her feline friends. Their companionship brought her immeasurable joy and comfort. She also received much joy from her painting and piano/organ playing for many years. Marjorie's warm spirit, combined with her unwavering determination, left an indelible mark on the lives of everyone she touched.
Marjorie is preceded in death by her parents; husband; brother, William Schmidt Jr.; sisters, Virginia Buscher and Lucille Barton; and her son-in-law, John Crandall.

Crandall (Jennifer), Brian Harper (Jennifer), Christopher Harper (Christina), Vanessa Harper (Alejandro Berroa), Elizabeth Moscarillo, and Matthew Harper; her great-grandchildren, James Crandall, Harper Crandall, Vivienne Crandall, Zooey Harper, Hadley Harper, Reid Moscarillo, Eli Moscarillo, and Melody Harper; as well as numerous nephews, nieces, and their children.
A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 4, 2023, at Oxley-Heard funeral home. Following the service, a celebration of life will take place at 5 p.m. at her daughter’s residence. In honor of Marjorie's deep love for the cats and dogs that enriched her life, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the Nassau Humane Society in her memory in lieu of flowers.
Although she has departed from this world, Marjorie's legacy will continue to inspire and bring comfort to those who were fortunate enough to know her. May she rest in eternal peace, forever surrounded by the love and gratitude of those who hold her dear.
