Martha Owens

Martha Jo Owens, age 83, of Fernandina Beach, peaceably transitioned to eternal life on Sunday afternoon, August 7, 2016.
Her legacy of character, philanthropy, commitment, love, charm and wit will long be testimonies of the Lord�s goodness. She also proved His faithfulness as she championed and marshaled many civic, educational and Christian spheres for change. She was a member of Macedonia A.M.E. Church.
She was born on February 6, 1933 to Samuel David and Brazie Lee Evans. She is predeceased by her loving husband, Frank and son, Torin.
She attended Orange County, Florida Public Schools and graduated in 1954 from Florida A & M University as Bachelor of Arts in Education and Journalism and remained a FAMU Lifetime Alumnus Member. She was a natural born orator. She taught in Nassau, Seminole and Clay County Public Schools for 38 years.
Completing her passion, she established scholarship trusts in two Florida four year universities for average students to give them a chance to complete a degree in education.
Mrs. Owens was a member of Nassau County Retired Teachers Association and she involved herself in the Mentors� League (Nassau County Schools) encouraging students to the field as educators and teachers.
As an active member of the Nu Iota Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority she was a contributor in regional and conference meetings.
She is survived by her son, Johnathan J. Owens, grandson, Jonathan J. Owens Jr. and his wife, Tanya and great grandson, Jamar, Orlando, FL. She also leaves behind three surviving sisters, Coretha Mack, Clermont, FL, Lizzie R. Thornton and Mary A. Harris, Orlando, FL, brother-in-law, Varnell Owens and his wife, Nancy, Hephzibah, GA as well as a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, August 20, 2016 in the Burgess Chapel of Oxley Heard with Pastor Betty Pittman, presiding.
Mrs. Owens will be conveyed by a horse drawn carriage to her final resting place in Bosque Bello Cemetery.
Her family will receive friends on Friday from 5:00 � 7:00 pm at Oxley Heard.
The repast will follow at the American Legion Post 54, 626 South 3rd Street, Fernandina Beach, FL.
