Nancy Elizabeth Clark Fagler, known to her friends as Betty, and forever known to her family as Bee Bee, is an unforgettable woman. Betty’s life displayed determined strength, fierce loyalty, and tenacity to move forward. The sadness of her passing is only softened knowing she is reunited with her beloved husband, Will Fagler, who passed three months earlier.

Betty was a quiet trailblazer who instilled a passion for learning, sought to do the right thing, and was tirelessly present supporting family. Her determination took her further in life than she thought possible, blessing her family with a long life filled with love, encouragement and thoughtful advice.

Born in Augusta, Georgia, Betty remembers leaving school to walk to Augusta National to watch the Master’s and have a pimento cheese sandwich. She played college basketball for Winthrop College, when women wore skirts, played half-court, well before Title IX for women’s sports. A diehard Georgia Bulldog fan, she was known for writing an occasional letter to the head football coaches concerning their coaching. Her master’s in education from UGA was a cherished accomplishment, and she remained a loyal fan, even wearing her Bulldog shirt to bed her last night on earth.

Betty met and married her heart’s love, Will Fagler, as she refereed a women’s basketball game at the gymnasium Will managed while stationed with the army. Sixty-eight years later, they left a legacy of covenantal love they modeled well for their family and those near them.

Betty enjoyed a career in education, teaching school in Georgia, Nebraska, North Carolina and Florida, first in physical education and later in science. Her passion for sports expanded over the years where Betty played competitive tennis in Florida and Georgia, soundly beating most of her family on the court. She and Will loved supporting their kids and then grandkids and great granddaughter. Whether local or around the U.S., they were on the sidelines or stands cheering.

Betty was preceded in death by her husband Will, and leaves behind two sons Chauncey (Rose), Jeff (Anne-Marie), four grandchildren Lauren, Sarah (Jake Wittmann), Tyler (Jimena), Brock, and one great granddaughter Reese sharing Bee Bee’s middle name Elizabeth.

A celebration of life will be held at Oxley-Heard Funeral Home in Fernandina Beach, 11:00 AM, Friday, July 24, 2026, followed by a reception at Chauncey’s & Rose’s home.
