Nellie Jane Surrency

2021-01-10

Mrs. Nellie Jane Roberts Surrency, 90, of Jacksonville, Florida passed away Sunday, January 10, 2021 at her home.

She was born in Waycross, GA and was a daughter of the late Neavley R. and Alma Flanders Roberts.

She married Mr. David E. Surrency Sr. in 1948. With her marriage to him, she began her career as a military wife. They traveled the world during his career of 22 years in the Air Force and incorporated many cultures in raising their 5 children. She maintained a home for them that was the place where all of the neighborhood kids wanted to hang out. She was The Mom who would serve as the den mother for the Girl Scouts and the Boy Scouts and was also involved in the PTA. She was always there for her children!

She and her husband settled in Jacksonville, Florida after his retirement and she continued to be involved in the lives of her family and the community. She was the type of lady who never met a stranger and was always willing to help others. She worked for 10 years with Meals on Wheels and was recognized for her contribution to that program.

Nellie Jane celebrated her strong faith at Chet's Creek Church. Having an Ocean Baptism was the highlight for her!

During her retirement years as a resident at the Atrium, she was elected as the Ambassador of the welcoming committee. She also served on the board of residents. Nellie earned the love and respect of the staff by always finding out more about them personally. Many of the workers were from other countries, so she would use her love of reading and her thirst for knowledge to find out as much as she could about those countries. She would then have conversations with them to find out even more. She treated everybody she met not only with care and respect but with love.

She was predeceased by her husband of 46 years in 1995 as well as her sister Barbara Summerall and brother, William Roberts.

She leaves behind her children, Stephanie Pickering (Nancy McGinnis) of Bryceville, David (Nancy) Surrency, Jr., of Jacksonville, Marc Surrency (Greg Denton) of Merritt Island, Jane (Chris) Austin of Jacksonville Beach and Amy (Stacy) Durance of Jacksonville; a sister, Scarlett Wolfe of South Bloomfield, OH; a brother, Rhett (Gloria) Roberts of Waycross, GA; her Grandchildren: Eric (Paula) Surrency, Leigha Myers, Dean (Devon) Surrency, Rachael (Dylan Brown) Durance, Devin (Brooke) Durance, Allie Surrency, Chloe Surrency and Lenora Durance; as well as four Great Grandchildren: Ashleigh Surrency, Amelia Surrency, Jaden Myers and Lydia Surrency.

Funeral services for Mrs. Surrency will be held Saturday, January 16, 2021 at 11:00 AM in the Burgess Chapel of Oxley-Heard Funeral Directors with Pastor Stephen Hogan of Chet's Creek Church officiating. The family will receive friends beginning at 10:00 AM.

She will be laid to rest beside her husband at Bosque Bello Cemetery.
