Nora Jeanette S. Sherwood

Mrs. Nora Jeanette Smith Sherwood, age 78 of Fernandina Beach passed away Wednesday, March 15, 2017 at her home.

Born in Cincinnati, OH she was one of four children born to the late Samuel Luke and Aletha Toadvine Smith. She grew up in Wilmington, NC where she was a graduate of New Hanover High School, Class of 1956. After high school she attended the Medical College of Virginia where she earned her certification as an Xray Technician. After college she returned to Wilmington and worked in Cape Fear and at New Hanover Hospital. In 1959 while visiting the USO club, she met a young Marine, Frederick Larry Sherwood whom she would marry in 1960. Mrs. Sherwood continued her career in healthcare as her husband remained on active duty with deployments to Vietnam and future moves to Jacksonville, Orange Park, Quantico, VA and Cherry Point, NC. In 1989 the Sherwoods retired and set sail aboard their 30 foot Westsail Cutter Rig sailboat. In 1990, after exploring areas to the north and south they arrived in Fernandina Beach. Upon settling here Mrs. Sherwood worked for a short time with Kmart before joining the Nassau County School System as a Para Pro in the SLD and EBD programs at Fernandina Beach High School, Middle School and Emma Love Hardee Elementary School.

Mrs. Sherwood was a voracious reader and loved film, art, photography and music.

She and her husband had attended St. Peter�s Episcopal Church.

In addition to her parents, she is preceded in death by a sister who passed away at the age of three, a brother, Samuel Sherwood and a son, Brian Sherwood, who passed away in 2010.

Mrs. Sherwood leaves behind her husband of 57 years, F. Larry Sherwood, Fernandina Beach , FL, their son, E. Larry Sherwood, Fernandina Beach, FL, a brother, Kenneth Smith, Wilmington, NC, four grandchildren, Chip Tavares, Julie Tavares Brookes, Patrick Sherwood, Jeffrey Sherwood and one great grandchild, Aiden Sherwood.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 am on Saturday, June 10, 2017 in the Burgess Chapel of Oxley Heard with the Reverend Rector Stephen Mazingo, officiating.

Her family will receive friends on Saturday, at the funeral home, from 10:00 am until the hour of service.
