Rachel Elizabeth �Betty� Long

Mrs. Betty C. Long, 96, of Fernandina Beach passed away Saturday, March 2, 2019 at Quality Health.

Born December 30, 1922 in Atlanta, GA, she was a daughter of the late H. W. and Rachel Bradford Cheney. Mrs. Long attended school in Fulton County, GA and upon graduation she enrolled at Georgia State College for Women in Milledgeville, graduating with a Bachelor�s Degree in English and Latin.

After marrying Ashburn, Georgia native, James Leonard Long, Sr., they moved to Jesup, Georgia where he worked for a local pharmacy. After the birth of their daughter Beth, they relocated to Fernandina in 1953, where he was employed at Waas Drug Store for many years. Their son James was born in 1955. Mrs. Long taught 7th grade English at Fernandina Beach Junior High School from 1967 until her retirement in 1980.

Mrs. Long was a member of the First Presbyterian Church and the Fernandina Beach Women�s Club. She was an avid golfer and also a member of the Nine Hole Women�s Golf Association. In her spare time she loved cross stitching, playing Bridge and was involved in women�s activities at First Presbyterian Church. Mr. and Mrs. Long were active in the Terpsichorean Club in Fernandina Beach.

She is preceded in death by her husband, James L. Long, Sr., two older sisters, Nancy Wynn and Patty Nix and her beloved dogs Pumpkin and Honey.

She leaves behind her daughter, Beth (Steve) Rich of Edisto Island, South Carolina; her son, James L. Long, Jr., of Fernandina Beach, Florida; her sister, Barbara Keel of Atlanta, Georgia; grandchildren, Tom (Donna) Rich, Courtney Rich Hanson, Timothy (Joy) Rich. She also leaves behind four great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be at 11:00 am on Thursday, March 7, 2019 at First Presbyterian Church with Pastor Wain Wesberry officiating.

The family will receive friends from 5:00 to 7:00 pm Wednesday evening at Oxley-Heard.

She will be laid to rest beside her husband in Bosque Bello Cemetery.

A reception will be held at the church following her services.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the Nassau Humane Society, 639 Airport Road, Fernandina Beach, Florida 32034

Briscoe: Sorry to read about your mom. I remember her as a teacher on Atlantic when we went to the old junior-high. May she rest in peace.
