Rebecca Lynn Jordi

2020-07-31

Rebecca Lynn Jordi passed away July 31, 2020, at the age of 66, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was at home, surrounded by family.

Becky was born March 1954, in Jacksonville, Florida. A daughter of Doyle and Sylvia Haddock, she graduated from Florida State University (BS), and Kutztown University (MS).

A teacher at heart, she taught at Northwestern Junior High, Word of Life Christian School, First Coast Christian School, and Penn State University Berks College, until she found her calling as an Extension Agent for the University of Florida here in Nassau County.

It was here Becky thrived, starting as the horticulture agent, achieving certification with the International Society of Arborists, and becoming the Nassau County Extension Director.

Rebecca has initiated many projects including the demonstration gardens at the Governmental Complex and the Yulee office; the Landscape Matters; Crash Course on Gardening; Garden Talk column in the News Leader; and many clinics on native plants, birds, rain barrels, herbs, and her beloved citrus. The Master Gardener program has thrived under her leadership, with many of them tirelessly serving the community with science-based knowledge gained through IFAS/UF.

She was often a feature speaker during the Home and Garden shows at Epcot, and did occasional TV appearances on WTLV 12 First Coast Living.

Her many awards include the Florida Association of Natural Resources Professionals-Mid Career Leadership Award; Florida Association of County Agricultural Agent Search for Excellence Team Award, National Finalist; National Finalist in Landscape Horticulture; Computerized Graphic Presentation Silver Award; and Extension Professional Association Young Professional of the Year.

One of her greatest achievements is seeing her childrens book Zoes Mission published, which was illustrated by local artist and Master Gardener Joanne Roach. She also included her grandchildren in the plot.

Beckys priorities were always her love of the Savior, Jesus Christ, and her family, especially her three sons, Ben, John, and Nathan, and the fine young men they have become. Her faith guided her through every major decision and event; if it didnt line up with the Word of God, it just didnt happen. She was always kind, and thoughtful, putting others before herself.

She was preceded in death by her stepmother, Sylvia Haddock, sister Carolyn Osburn, and brother Billy David.

Rebecca is survived by her husband of 43 years, Doug; father, Doyle Haddock; sons, Ben (Julie), John (Stephanie) and Nathan (Jessicca); sister, Marolyn (Randy) Bristowe; brother, Dan (Brenda) Haddock; and grandchildren, Eli, Silas, Noah, Rowen, and Sophia; and nieces and nephews.

A private service will be held for the immediate family; however, a Celebration of Life will be held this fall to coincide with the dedication of the new Extension building on Miner Road which will bear her name.

In lieu of flowers, fans of Becky can support the local Extension Master Gardener program by purchasing Zoes Mission from the County Extension Office in Yulee, phone 904-530-6350.

There is so much to say about Becky Jordi its almost too much to write in a short condolence. My prayers go out to Doug & her boys & their families. Becky was the most thoughtful, kind, understanding teacher. She had fun while inspiring her students to succeed. She & Doug sold me my first car and I proudly drove that white Toyota Corolla!! Her love of science was contagious and that desire to dissect, and later judge science projects With her as a colleague was very special times I got to spend with her. Her love of hymns & scripture songs still resonates in my heart as I sing them. Her infectious laugh & jolly spirit even when faced with the fight of her life. I am so glad I purchased her book & had her sign it. I will always love her forever!

Mrs. Jordi was an amazing teacher and an excellent mother. I spent many childhood days over at her house with her son Ben. (Ill never forget the time we were loud one night and all of us boys got a whoop in from Doug.

As the years have passed, I have fell out of touch with the Jordi family. But the impact she had on my life has never faded. She was a sweet lady and heaven definitely gained a special angel!

SARAH BOYD CUMMINGS August 7, 2020
Becky was my high school teacher many years ago and made a tremendous impact on my life. She had a gentle but passionate way of teaching that helped me fall in love with teaching and now Ive been teaching for almost 20 years. She taught me beautiful hymns that I treasure and now pass on to my music students. When I get up to lead my students in singing, I still picture the beautiful expression of worship on her face as she would close here eyes and sing to the Lord. Im praying for your family to have the comfort of the Holy Spirit surround you.

MERITA HAWK August 13, 2020
I knew Becky from Word of Life church. We both served on the visitation team. I was new to the church and we were teamed together for my first visit. I did not know her at all and was concerned about what we would have in common to talk about while in transit. She immediately put me at ease because we talked about what we both had in common, the love of Jesus. Thats what we talked about the entire trip. I will always remember that visit and her great love for fthe Lord, My condolences to Doug and the family.

JEFF COOK August 13, 2020
Doug, my heart breaks for you buddy. Even though I only met Becky a couple of times, I know how much she meant to you. Remembering sharing the office with you on Philips Highway and missing those gummy bears. Youre a good man my friend.

ANN AND JIM KEMP August 14, 2020
We have had nothing but admiration and deep affection for Becky. Shortly after we moved here from Tallahassee in 2007, Jim took the Master Gardener course which was taught by Becky, and ever since then they stayed in contact, sharing information on various plants and gardening ideas. We loved her sense of humor, her amazing knowledge and her passionate interest in the natural world. She will be terribly missed and we extend our most sincere condolences to her family.

DARRYL PALMER August 20, 2020
Here is a story Becky told me about an alligator named Reggie:
Sitting on the edge of the retention pond I was hand pulling weeds, very focused on the job at hand. Suddenly, I hear a strange hissing sound coming from my left side. I turn to see a 4-5 foot gator, standing on all four legs, hissing at me. He was about 3 feet from me and his surprise closeness to me made me profoundly uncomfortable. It took a few minutes for me to get up on my feet but once I did, I started directing Reggie to get back into the water. I believe my direct words were, go on, back up, keep going. I kept directing the gator to back into the water telling Reggie to back off. What was so surprising was how obedient the gator was until he was totally back into the water. The gator visits occasionally but never comes up on the shore when I am working on the pond.
