Richard Dallas Green, Jr.

Mr. Richard Dallas �Captain Dick� Green, age 88 of Fernandina Beach passed away on Thursday morning, May 18, 2017 at Baptist Medical Center in Fernandina Beach.
Born in St. Mary�s, GA, he was the eldest of three children born to the late Richard Dallas Green and Leona Vern Ryals. At the age of thirteen, Mr. Green began a long and storied career of fishing and shrimping. He started working with the Corbett Family at Fernandina Fertilizer Co.; first in the pogey plant and later on the pogey boats around Fernandina and off the coast of Louisiana. From 1945 � 1949 he served in the United States Navy as a Boiler Maker and was involved in the Eniwetok Atomic testing project. Upon being honorably discharged he returned home to Fernandina and worked for a short time with the Fernandina Police Department. Within a short amount of time he returned to the waters around Fernandina and ran shrimp boats for and worked with the Tringallis, the Burbanks, Captain Cecil Bennett, Captain Dan Turner and other local shrimpers. Over the ensuing years, Mr. Green not only Captained shrimp boats in the waters of the United States but also traveled to locations to include the Philippines, Mexico, Hawaii, Russia, China, Indonesia and Asia and ran shrimp boats and taught techniques for catching shrimp, net making and knot tying to foreign shrimpers and fisherman. He was truly a respected and renowned Pioneer of the Shrimping Industry.
In 1954 he had married, Atlanta, GA native, Wanda Juanita Guest who had moved to Fernandina with her family as a young girl. After years of being away on Shrimp boats for extended periods of time Mr. Green accepted a position at Container Corporation of America in order to be home with his wife and growing family. He and his family lived in Old Towne and he remained at CCA until retiring in 1990. Upon retiring he bought the Lady Lou and once again shrimped the local waters of Fernandina Beach as well as around the Gulf Coast and Carabelle, FL. In 1997 the Greens moved to Nassauville. In later years Mr. Green stayed closer to home and worked with the Security Departments of the FAA in Hilliard and Baptist Medical Center in Fernandina Beach. His beloved wife, Wanda, passed away in August of 2016.
He and Wanda had attended Blackrock Baptist Church.
In addition to his parents and wife, he is preceded in death by two grandsons.
Mr. Green leaves behind, four sons, Delmas Anthony �Tony� Green, Fernandina Beach, FL, Richard Dallas Green III, Lafayette, LA, Woody Dale Green and his wife, Delcy, Lake Charles, LA, Michael Edward �Eddie� Green, Atlanta, GA, a daughter, Lou Cinda �Cinda� Ferguson and her husband, Bill, Fernandina Beach, FL, a brother, Edward Roger Green, Yulee, FL, a sister, Ida Beatrice Johnson, Fernandina Beach, FL, nine grandchildren, several great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
Funeral services will be at 11:00 am on Tuesday, May 23, 2017 in the Burgess Chapel of Oxley Heard with Ricky Lucas, officiating.
Mr. Green will be laid to rest, just steps away from the salt marsh that he loved, with his wife and infant grandsons in Bosque Bello Cemetery.
His family will receive friends from 5-7 pm on Monday and from 10 am until the hour of service in Tuesday, at Oxley Heard.
