Richard Nelson Houdesheldt, Jr.
2020-05-12
Mr. Richard Rick Nelson Houdesheldt, Jr., 66, of Fernandina Beach passed away May 10, 2020 at his home.
Rick was born in at Chanute Air Force Base in Rantoul, IL and was a son of the late Richard Nelson Houdesheldt and Nancy Hosler Houdesheldt.
He grew up in Marietta, Georgia and graduated from Wheeler High School and studied Art at the University of Georgia. Shortly after his graduation from UGA, he moved to Alaska to work on an oil pipeline. Not fond of the long, dark and cold winter nights in Alaska, Rick moved back south and lived on Cumberland Island, Georgia.
He enjoyed life on Cumberland Island. He worked as a caretaker there and loved the many opportunities to fish and paint. Rick loved the barrier islands of Georgia and North Florida. He was passionate about his painting and the islands afforded many beautiful coastal and nature scenes for him to paint. Later in life, Rick obtained his Real Estate License and began work on Amelia Island.
An amazing storyteller, he could entertain those around him for hours with his stories and tales. Many people were touched by his kindnesses, his gentle demeanor and his humor. Rick loved being with his friends and was generous with his time and talents. He helped several families by building handicap ramps for those he could help.
Rick was a good son to his parents, a good brother to his siblings and a good friend to many. His belief of Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior was always paramount in his life.
He will be missed by all who knew him. A service to remember and honor his life is planned for Saturday, July 25, 2020 in Fernandina Beach. Details of those plans will be announced at a later time.
