Richard Wells "Dick" Galphin, Jr.

Richard Wells “Dick” Galphin, 96, of Atlantic Beach, Florida, passed away peacefully on November 11, 2025. He was born on May 26, 1929 in Oriental, North Carolina.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Richard Wells Galphin, Sr. and Margaret Colvin Galphin, sister Mary Louise Galphin, and brothers Robert Galphin and George Galphin. He is survived by his loving wife of 74 years, Carolyn Montgomery Galphin, daughters Gail Cook, Catherine Galphin, Margaret Farrell (Rob), and son Richard Galphin (Dorothy); grandchildren Angela, Tamie, Tessie, Kristy, and Sean; and great grandchildren Owen, James, Fiona, Calvin, Dylan, Asher, Reagan, and Griffin.

Dick was very proud to have graduated from Georgia Tech in 1951 on an NROTC scholarship and served three years in the Navy during the Korean War and eight years in the Naval Reserves. He worked for Container Corporation in Fernandina Beach, FL for over 30 years and Rayonier in Jesup, GA for 10 years.

He met the love of his life on a blind date while at Georgia Tech and they married July 21, 1951. They were best friends for over 75 years.

He loved his family, most particularly his great grandchildren. He delighted in watching the slide show of their pictures every day. He believed in service to his church and community. He served as Lay Leader and taught Sunday School at Memorial United Methodist Church and Jesup First United Methodist Church. He was a Rotarian for over 50 years, served as President of the Wayne County American Heart Association and was treasurer of the Good Samaritan Food Bank Center in Jesup for over twenty years.

His Celebration of Life will be held at Christ United Methodist Church, 400 Penman Road, NEPTUNE BEACH, FL, on Saturday, November 22, 2025 at 2:00PM. This service can be live streamed at: https://www.youtube.com/@christunitedmethodistchurc5774/streams

Visitation will be held on Sunday, November 23, 2025 at 2:00PM, at Amelia Baptist Church, 961167 Buccaneer Trail, Fernandina Beach, FL, with interment to follow in Bosque Bello Cemetery at 4:00PM.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to BEAM, The Salvation Army, The Gideon’s International, Habitat for Humanity, or Heifer International.
