Ruby Alice Walz Saunders
2020-03-16
Ruby Alice Walz Saunders, 96, passed away on March 13, 2020 in Fernandina Beach, FL. She was born on September 13, 1923 in Ponchatoula, Louisiana to the late Frank and Alice Walz. She spent her growing up years on a farm, collecting eggs, picking strawberries and swimming in the creek. When she graduated from Ponchatoula High School and secretarial school, she got on a train, at 19, and traveled to Washington DC to work for the Navy Department during WWII. There she met and married the love of her life for 61 years, George Saunders, and together they had 2 sons. Due to her husbands job assignments they moved all over the country including Silver Spring, MD Seattle, WA, New Orleans, LA, Waterford, CT, Hammond LA and Fernandina Beach, FL. They took many vacations visiting numerous United States National Parks and family around the country. She and George also traveled extensively around the world during their retirement years.
From 1968 to 1984 Ruby worked as an Administrative Assistant at General Dynamics Electric Boat in Groton, CT for the development of the Trident Nuclear Submarine.
Rubys sparkling, twinkling eyes and bright smile lit up the room and never met a stranger. She had a quick wit, and was an accomplished, avid bridge player. She was a member of the Newcomers Club in Fernandina and a long time member of Grace Episcopal Church. She had a green thumb and enjoyed being a member of a garden club as well. Ruby was a master in the kitchen, canning fruits and vegetables, and baking the most delicious cookies, cakes, and pies. She loved her friends and family dearly and was happiest being around them.
Ruby was preceded in death by her husband George, her sister Ethel (Dewey) Bernard, and her brothers Harry (Rita) Walz, Bud Walz, and John (Yvonne) Walz.
She is survived by her sons George (Patricia) Saunders IV; Alan (Elyse) Saunders; grandchildren Ward Saunders, Ken (Jamie) Saunders, Becky Saunders, Dori Romancik, Scott (Jaime) Saunders, Kristin (Jason) Loccisano; great grandchildren Riley Saunders, Cal Saunders, Haley Romancik, Jackson and Tillie Saunders, Max and Lia Loccisano; many nieces and nephews; special friends Liz Pascoe and Debbie Westhouse.
A celebration of her life will be held at 10:30 am on Wednesday, July 8, 2020 in the Burgess Chapel of Oxley-Heard.
She will be laid to rest in Bosque Bello Cemetery
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Community Hospice and Palliative Care Foundation, 4266 Sunbeam Road, Jacksonville, FL, 32257, 904-886-3883.
Memories
JOHN WALZ March 21, 2020
I have such great memories of Aunt Ruby. I remember as a child how excited I was when Aunt Ruby and Uncle George would come to Ponchatoula for their annual visit. The whole family would get together and reminisce about days gone by, and I would take it all in. She was a terrific person who led a wonderful life, and we offer our deepest condolences to all of her family.
AMBER WALZ May 2, 2020
I always loved seeing Aunt Ruby especially after my grandfather Henry Walz passed bc looking into her eyes was just like looking into his eyes. Was saddened to hear of this but grateful to know.
