Ruby Duncan Travillian

2021-03-25

Ruby Duncan Travillian, 93, of Fernandina Beach passed away Thursday, March 25, 2021 at the Warner Center for Caring.

Born in Jefferson County, Georgia, she was one of nine children born to the late Henry Ford and Edda Estelle Sosbee Nicholson.

Ruby moved to Fernandina Beach with her late husband, Ray “Big Daddy” Duncan in 1951. They moved from Montgomery, Alabama. For many years Mr. Duncan operated an Amoco service station on 8th Street.

Ruby worked as Pharmacy Tech at Steger’s Pharmacy for over 27 years. As was often the case in small town drug stores, she had a multitude of responsibilities. From helping the pharmacist, to providing counter service at the small coffee shop in the Pharmacy, she was able to do it all. She made many friends over the years and she loved all of them dearly. Ruby’s friends were both young and old and she thoroughly enjoyed them all.

Among her favorite things was reading, music, discussing politics and her love of walking on the beach. She would always talk about how much she loved Fernandina Beach and how much she loved living here. She would reminisce about living here at the time when you could leave your door unlocked and have a neighbor come over to borrow a cup of sugar. Friends were more than friends, they were family.

In addition to her parents and siblings, Ruby was predeceased by her second husband, Louis Travillian; her daughter, Glenda Mott and her grandchildren, Jimbo and Jesse Duncan.

She leaves behind her children, Billy Duncan and Barbara Duncan, both of Fernandina Beach; her grandchildren, Raymond (Susan) Duncan, Robbie Mott, Amanda Mott, Michael (Renee) Armstrong and Cherish (Stephen) Wade; nine great grandchildren, one great-great grandchild; a stepson, Johnny (Melissa) Travillian and their children, Mattie and Brett of Ringgold, Georgia and an “adopted” daughter, Sara Arenella of Fernandina Beach.

Mrs. Travillian’s family will receive friends Thursday, April 1st from 5:30 until 7:00 PM at Oxley-Heard Funeral Directors.
She will be laid to rest in a graveside service at Jacksonville National Cemetery, 4083 Lannie Rd, Jacksonville 32218 on Friday, April 2, 2021 at 9:30 AM (Lane # 2) with Rev. Frank Camarotti officiating.

The family wishes to extend a special thanks to Dr. Edward Tribuzio and his staff as well as the staff of Fernandina Beach Rehab and Nursing Center and Community Hospice for the wonderful and compassionate care of their mother.

Those desiring, may make donations to Community Hospice of NE Florida in Ruby’s name.
