True love travels beyond the grave. It only the ones left behind that feel the pain. I asking God for His healing angels to minister to the ones left behind. Shirley household was always full of joy and businesses of the day when I used to hang out as a kid and into my teens. I can see you where a light to many! Your light will carry on through your children. May God bless you and your family that will carry on at this time

Deepest sympathy to Kamie and all her extended family. I loved playing and having sleep overs with my friend Kamie. The love and Christian faith that Shirley and Jimmy shared in their home had a huge impact on me. My parents were separating and then divorced. I am so lucky I had the friendship and support of Kamie and her family. I hope Shirley was aware of the comfort and refuge she provided to my 8 to 10was

Dear Shirley, we were all just trying to accept the loss of Jimmy, when life took a severe, drastic change, when it took you from us! How dare it! We had just decided to honor Jimmy’s memory by visiting you when we return and offering our support as you find your new path in this life, but you decided that you couldn’t do life justice without your partner, the love of your life and decided to join him in Eternity as your new path in life. You will always be special to those who knew you and the way that you and Jimmy completed each other was a testament of what true love should be. It’s still a shock and there will now be two special people to grieve and remember, lovingly. God Bless.

Such a beautiful Lady inside and out. I knew Shirley as a friendly neighbor for quite a few years before I came to work with her at the YMCA Atlantic Campus. Then I really got to know her as she offered me her friendship as well as a wonderful mentor. Every employee knew they could count on Shirley to follow through on projects and tasks and she always went above and beyond expectations. We all considered her our best friend and I was daily impressed with her ability to provide unconditional Love to each and every child no matter their differences in personality or disabilities. Such and amazing great Lady I feel so much better a person having the opportunity to get to know her.

Playing tennis with Shirley was a joy - her love of life and love of tennis was contagious!

She was definitely the life of the party at her granddaughter, Presley’s baby shower. She was so funny as we were playing all the games and she was a true winner. She also loved my daughter and had her sitting in her lap and was just an absolute joy to be around !!! We will miss her and she will always be in our memories!!!

Shirley Ann Rushing

2022-09-08

Mrs. Shirley Ann Rushing, 83, of Fernandina Beach, passed away Thursday, September 8th, 2022. She was surrounded by her children and grandchildren, at Baptist Medical Center in downtown Jacksonville. She was greeted in heaven by her late husband, Jimmy Rushing who passed on July 29th of this year.

She was born in Phoenix City, Alabama and was the daughter of Carlton and Rosa Harbert. Shirley Rushing moved to Fernandina Beach in1972 and has been a loved member of the community for most of her life.

When Shirley was 20, her beauty caught the eye of Jimmy Rushing, her young and vivacious spirit enraptured him, and they married on February 3rd, 1959. Soon after marrying they became parents to: James Rushing, Wendy (Rushing) Keen, Ron Rushing, Kamie (Rushing) Fournier, and Brad Rushing. As a mother she was very energetic and involved with her children and their activities. She would coach them in sports and cheer, she even took dance classes alongside them.

Mrs. Rushing was an excellent seamstress. She would lovingly sew dresses for her children, and after she moved to Fernandina, she worked at Just Sew with her good friend Gwen Millaim.... creating and tailoring pieces for those in the community. Mrs. Shirley is the name she was affectionately called by the students at Emma Love Hardee, where she worked as a lunch lady for many years. She also worked as a camp counselor and after school caregiver with the local YMCA.

Friends and family of Shirley know just how much she loved tennis. She even instilled her love for tennis in some of her grandchildren who went on to play in high school. The dedication she had to continue playing despite her health challenges over the years was inspiring. She could also hold her own fishing right alongside Papa Dee. She wasn't afraid to throw a line. They would fish together while enjoying a family beach day with their kids and grandkids and would go home to prepare a fish fry with their catch of the day.

Shirley was known as selfless, loving, faithful, and she never met a stranger. She could always find joy in every situation and her laugh was absolutely contagious. She unconditionally loved everyone in her family, her children, her grandchildren, and her great grandchildren. She would always send out musical cards and gifts to everyone on their birthdays. She never forgot birthdays and would rather send a late card than none at all. Giving was one of her greatest joys. She will be remembered by her family as one of the most accepting and gracious individuals the world has ever known.

Mrs. Rushing was very active in her faith, she was a member of Five Points Baptist and Springhill Baptist Church during her life. She leaves behind a sister, many nieces and nephews, 5 children, 14 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild on the way.

Shirley Rushing's celebration of life will be held Monday, September 12, 2022 at 10 am in the Burgess Chapel of Oxley-Heard Funeral Directors. The family will receive friends prior to the service Monday from 9 am to 10 am.
