Thomas Anthony Freeman

Thomas Anthony Freeman - simply Tom or Tommy to his family and friends - passed away on Thursday, September 17, 2026 at his home in Fernandina Beach. He was 56.
Tom was born on March 25, 1970 in Barberton, Ohio to Susanna (Schleis) and Jerry Freeman. He spent the first couple years of his life in Germany, where his father was stationed in the U.S. Army. He returned to Akron wearing lederhosen.
He graduated from St. Vincent-St. Mary High School in Akron and embarked on a lifelong career as a truck driver. He moved to Florida some 15 years ago, and most recently worked for Relay Terminals in Jacksonville. Tom loved being a truck driver and often spoke of how the freedom of the road made him feel, and the many colorful personalities he got to meet along the way.
At home, he and his wife, Lisa Cunliffe, were passionate about animals. The couple cared for various dogs, cats and other species retrieved from shelters or found alongside the road. Their most recent menagerie consists of three dogs, four cats and a bearded dragon. Tom was constantly encouraging those he knew to adopt some of their own.
Tom was a fantastic friend. He was constantly helping neighbors and co-workers with everything from fixing cars to helping with moving. In his neighborhood, the 6’6” Tom was often called on to assist with putting up seasonal decorations up and down the street. Tom loved the beach. He would walk the dogs along the shore or sit for hours just enjoying the peaceful scenery. But he also loved action and was a devoted fan of all things NASCAR.
Cooking and grilling were also among his favorite activities. Whether he was smoking a brisket or testing out various flavors for his chicken wings, there was almost always more than enough to share with neighbors or take to work. But if Tom will be remembered for anything, it would be his infectious smile. His broad grin would light up any room and at least temporarily cure any ills of the day.
He was preceded in death by his mom, Susanna Freeman, and his brother, Kevin Freeman
Tom leaves behind Lisa, his wife of four years but his love for more than a decade. He also leaves his father Jerry Freeman, of Bath Township, Ohio; and his brother Daniel (Amy) of Cuyahoga Falls, Ohio.
The service to remember and honor Tom’s life will be Thursday, October 1, 2026 at 3:00 PM in the Burgess Chapel of Oxley-Heard Funeral Directors.
Rather than flowers, please donate to your local Humane Society or animal shelter.
